  • Honda B/H/F Series Rear Main Seal - 91214-PLE-003

Got oil leaking from the back of your engine near the transmission? Your rear main seal's leaking. The Honda B/H/F series rear main seal (part number 91214-PLE-003) seals your crankshaft where it exits the back of your engine block. When the seal gets old and hard, it leaks oil. You'll see oil dripping from the bellhousing area or oil spots under your car after it's been parked. Replace the rear main seal when you're doing a clutch job or engine rebuild. Don't reuse old seals. They always leak.

Why Your Rear Main Seal Leaks

Your rear main seal sits where your crankshaft exits the back of your engine block and goes into your transmission. It keeps oil from leaking out past the crankshaft. The seal's made from rubber, and over time it gets hard and brittle from heat and oil exposure. Once the seal hardens, it doesn't seal properly and oil leaks past it. If you're pulling your transmission for a clutch job or you're doing an engine rebuild, replace the rear main seal at the same time. Don't try to reuse the old seal. Even if it looks fine, it's already hard and compressed, and it won't seal when you reinstall your transmission.

Replace It During Clutch Jobs or Engine Rebuilds

Any time you pull your transmission, replace this seal. The seal's like five bucks and it takes two minutes to install when you've already got the transmission out. If you reuse the old seal and it leaks, you've got to pull your transmission all over again to replace it. That's hours of work to save five bucks. Don't do that to yourself. If you're doing a clutch job, engine rebuild, or transmission swap, order a new rear main seal with your parts so you've got it when you need it.

Note: Replace this seal every time you remove your transmission. Don't reuse old seals. They always leak. Clean the crankshaft surface and the seal bore in your engine block before you install the new seal. If there's old seal material stuck in the bore, scrape it out. Press the new seal in straight using a seal driver or a large socket that matches the seal's outer diameter. If you install the seal crooked, it'll leak. Lube the seal lip with a little engine oil before you install your flywheel and transmission. Don't force the transmission onto the engine. If it's not going on easily, something's misaligned. Check your clutch disc alignment and your transmission input shaft alignment before you force it.
