Transmission fluid dripping from your shift rod area? That's a dead shift rod oil seal. This is the genuine Honda OEM seal (part number 91215-PL3-005) that seals the shift rod where it enters your D series transmission case. Rubber seals harden over time from heat and oil exposure - once they're hard, they can't conform to the shaft and fluid starts leaking past them. You'll usually catch it as a slow drip under the car near the transmission, or you'll notice your fluid level keeps dropping with no obvious source.

Why Your Shift Rod Seal Fails

The shift rod seal lives in a rough environment. It's constantly bathed in hot transmission fluid, flexing every time you grab a gear, and getting heat-cycled over thousands of miles. Most of these seals start going soft and porous somewhere around the 100k mile mark, though plenty fail earlier on cars that see track use or run synthetic fluid at higher temps. Once the rubber hardens and loses its lip tension, it's done - no amount of stop-leak fixes it. The only fix is pulling the transmission and replacing the seal.

Replace It Any Time You're In There

This seal is about three bucks. Pulling your transmission to fix a leak you could have prevented costs you an afternoon minimum. If you're already doing a clutch job, transmission rebuild, or swap - just order one of these with your other parts. Swap it in while you've got the trans out. Two minutes of work. The math is obvious.

When you install it, scrape any old seal material out of the bore first. Press the new seal in straight - install it crooked and it'll leak immediately. Put a small amount of clean transmission fluid on the seal lip before you slide the shift rod through it. That's the whole job.

Note: This is a D series transmission seal only. It does NOT fit B series transmissions. If you've got a Del Sol VTEC or a 99-00 Civic Si EM1 with a B16, you need part number 91215-689-013 instead - those vehicles are specifically excluded from this seal's fitment. See the fitment notes below for full compatibility details.
