Getting VTEC engagement issues or a P1259 on your Accord, CL, or Insight? Before you start replacing expensive parts, pull your VTEC solenoid and check this filter. It's the genuine Honda VTEC spool valve filter for F22B and F23A engines, and it's one of the most overlooked causes of VTEC problems. It sits behind the solenoid and filters oil before it reaches the spool valve. When it's clogged with sludge, there's not enough oil pressure to engage VTEC and your car throws a code. It's a cheap fix that most people skip right past. Part number 15825-P0A-015.

Why It Causes Problems

The spool valve filter's job is to catch contaminants before they reach the VTEC solenoid. If you've been stretching oil changes or the engine's got a lot of miles on it, sludge and debris build up in the filter and oil flow gets restricted. Once it's restricted enough, the spool valve can't actuate and VTEC won't engage. A fresh filter, new solenoid gasket, and clean oil fix this issue more often than anything else. Don't throw a new solenoid at it before you've checked the filter first.

Replace It Every Time You Pull the Solenoid

Any time you've got the VTEC solenoid off for cleaning or replacement, swap this filter out too. It's right there, it's a few dollars, and there's no good reason to put the solenoid back on without a fresh one behind it.
