Why the Right Dipstick Actually Matters

A dipstick isn't just a stick. It's got to be the exact right length to reach the bottom of your oil pan, and the bend has to match your engine so it seats properly in the tube. Get that wrong and your oil level readings are wrong - every single time you check.

Too short and it reads low when you're actually full. Too long or bent wrong and it reads high, so you think you're good when you're actually down a quart. Running your B series low on oil starves the rod bearings and VTEC head. Overfilling causes the crank to whip the oil into foam, which kills oil pressure almost instantly. How to Check Your Oil Correctly: Check on flat ground with the engine off and cooled for at least five minutes. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, reinsert it all the way, pull it out again, then read the level. Checking right after shutdown gives you a false low reading because oil is still draining back into the pan. Don't overfill - if you're above the high mark, drain some out. Foamed oil doesn't lubricate.
