Honda D Series Reverse Light Switch - 35600-P20-003
Your reverse lights aren't working on your D series Civic or Del Sol and you've traced it to a bad reverse light switch? Part number 35600-P20-003. This is the OEM backup light switch that screws into the top of your D series transmission. When you shift into reverse, the switch closes and sends power to your reverse lights so people know you're backing up. When the switch fails, your reverse lights don't work. You're backing out of parking spots in the dark and nobody can see you. That's how you get hit.
Here's How the Switch Fails
The reverse light switch sits on top of your transmission getting sprayed with road salt, water, and grime. Over time the connector corrodes, or the switch itself goes bad internally. Sometimes the wiring harness connector breaks or gets so corroded it won't make contact anymore. When the switch fails, your reverse lights are dead. You shift into reverse and nothing happens. No lights. An accident waiting to happen, and unfortunately, it's your fault.
Sold as Complete Assembly with Connector
This switch comes complete with the wiring connector already attached. You're not buying just the sensor, you're getting the whole assembly. That's good because if your reverse lights aren't working, there's a decent chance the connector's corroded or cracked anyway. The complete assembly means you're replacing everything that could be bad. Unbolt the old switch, screw in the new one, plug in your harness, and you're done. If your old connector's crusty and corroded, this new assembly fixes that problem too.
Easy Job, Big Safety Improvement
Replacing this switch takes about ten minutes. The switch screws into the top of your transmission case. You can get to it from under the car or from the engine bay depending on how flexible you are. Unplug the harness, unscrew the old switch, screw in the new one, plug the harness back in. That's it. Your reverse lights work again and you're not a hazard in parking lots anymore. For a ten minute job and a twenty dollar part, there's no excuse to drive around with dead reverse lights.

Note: This switch screws into the top of your D series transmission case. Before you install the new switch, clean the threads in the transmission case. If there's old thread sealant or debris in there, clean it out. The switch threads need to be clean for a good seal. When you're installing the new switch, don't use thread sealant or Teflon tape unless your old switch had it. Most of these switches seal with a metal-to-metal taper fit and don't need sealant. If you do use sealant, use it sparingly - you don't want sealant squeezing into the transmission and gunking up your gears. Thread the switch in by hand first to make sure it's not cross-threaded. Once it's hand-tight, snug it down with a wrench. Don't crank on it, the threads are in aluminum, and you'll strip them if you overtighten. Snug is good enough. Plug the harness connector back in and make sure it clicks. Test your reverse lights before you put your tools away. Shift into reverse and check that the lights come on. If they don't, check your bulbs and your fuses before you assume the switch is bad. Sometimes it's just a blown bulb or a pulled fuse. But if your bulbs are good and your fuse is good and your reverse lights still don't work, this switch is your problem.
