Honda K Series Timing Chain Guide Pivot Bolt - 90003-PNA-000
Doing a timing chain replacement on your K series and you need the timing chain guide pivot bolt? This is the specialty bolt that mounts the front timing chain guide at the top and lets it pivot when your tensioner moves. Part number 90003-PNA-000. It's got a long shoulder and short threaded section that you won't find at any hardware store. When you're pulling your timing chain cover off to replace your chain, tensioner, or guides, you're supposed to replace this bolt. Old bolts get stretched from constant vibration and they lose clamping force. Fresh bolt keeps your timing chain guide mounted properly so your chain stays aligned and your valves don't kiss your pistons.
Here's What This Bolt Does
Your front timing chain guide's spring-loaded on the tensioner. The tensioner pushes on the guide to keep tension on your timing chain as the chain stretches over time. The guide needs to pivot at the top to move with the tensioner. This bolt's the pivot point. It's got a long smooth shoulder that acts as a pin for the guide to rotate on, and a short threaded section that bolts into your cylinder head. The guide pivots on the shoulder while the bolt holds it in place. If you use a regular bolt without the shoulder, the guide can't pivot right and your chain tension gets screwed up. Wrong bolt means timing chain noise, excessive wear, or chain skip. That's bent valves.
Specialty Hardware You Can't Find at the Store
This isn't a bolt you can substitute from Ace Hardware. The long shoulder and short thread are specific to this application. Hardware store bolts are all thread with no shoulder. You need the shoulder for the guide to pivot on. Trying to use a regular bolt means the guide's binding on the threads instead of pivoting smoothly. Your timing chain tensioner can't do its job and you're going to have problems. Just order the OEM bolt and do it right.
Replace It During Timing Chain Service
When you're in your timing chain doing a chain replacement, replace this bolt. It's cheap and it's critical for proper timing chain operation. The bolt gets stressed every time your engine runs from the spring pressure on the timing chain guide. After 100k+ miles or if you've had timing chain noise from a stretched chain slapping around, the bolt's fatigued. Don't reuse it and find out it's worn when your timing jumps and you bend valves. Replace the bolt, the chain, the tensioner, and the guides all at once. It's not worth saving $5 on a bolt when you're already $500 deep in a timing chain job.
