Honda K20A/K20Z/K24A/S2000 Spark Plug Tube Seal - 12342-PCX-004
Your spark plugs are sitting in a puddle of oil and you're getting misfires because the oil's fouling the plugs? Part number 12342-PCX-004. This is the OEM rubber seal that sits at the top of each spark plug tube where the valve cover meets the tube. The seal keeps oil from leaking down the spark plug tube and getting on your spark plugs. When the seal fails, oil seeps past it and drips down the tube onto your spark plug. The plug gets coated in oil, it misfires, and you're getting a check engine light. Fresh seal stops the oil from getting to the plug and your misfires go away.
Here's Why These Seals Always Fail
The spark plug tube seals sit at the top of the spark plug tubes where the valve cover seals to them. They're rubber and they're living in a 200+ degree environment with oil constantly around them. Over time the rubber gets hard and brittle. It shrinks a bit and stops sealing. Oil starts seeping past the seal and dripping down the tube onto your spark plug. You'll pull a plug and it's covered in oil. That's a failed tube seal. These seals usually fail around 100k miles but they can go earlier if your engine runs hot or if you're hard on it. Once one seal fails, the others aren't far behind. If you've got oil on one plug, check the others. You're probably replacing multiple seals.
Sold Individually So You Only Replace What's Bad
These seals are sold individually. Most engines have four spark plugs, so four tube seals. If only one or two seals are leaking, you can replace just those ones. You don't have to buy a whole set if you don't need it. That said, if one seal's failed and your engine's got 100k+ miles on it, the other seals are probably close to failing too. It's your call whether you want to replace just the bad ones now and come back later for the rest, or replace all of them while you're in there and be done with it. Doing them all at once saves you from pulling the valve cover multiple times.
You're Pulling the Valve Cover to Replace These
The spark plug tube seals sit at the top of the tubes where they meet the valve cover. You can't get to them without pulling the valve cover off. Valve cover off, pull the old seals out, press the new seals into the valve cover, reinstall the cover with a fresh valve cover gasket. It's not a hard job but it takes a few hours. If you're already doing valve cover gasket work or you're swapping cams or doing any head work, replace these seals while you're in there. They're cheap and you're already in the valve cover anyway. Don't wait for them to fail and have to go back in later.
