Here's What Engine Knock Actually Is

Engine knock, also called detonation or pinging, is when the air and fuel mixture in your cylinder ignites at the wrong time or in multiple places at once instead of burning smoothly from the spark plug. Normal combustion's got one flame front that spreads out from the spark plug in a controlled burn. Knock's when you get multiple explosions happening at the same time from hot spots in the combustion chamber. These explosions create pressure waves that slam into each other and bang against your piston. That's the pinging sound you hear. It sounds like marbles rattling in your engine. Knock destroys engines. The pressure spikes from detonation hammer your pistons, crack ringlands, blow head gaskets, and beat up your rod bearings. The Knock Sensor Protects Your Engine

The knock sensor's your engine's early warning system. It's listening for the high-frequency vibrations that knock creates usually around 5-7 kHz. When it picks up those vibrations, it converts them into a voltage signal and sends it to the ECU. The ECU sees the knock signal and immediately retards the ignition timing a few degrees. Pulling timing back stops the knock. The ECU keeps adjusting timing in real-time to run as much timing as possible without knocking. This gives you maximum power and efficiency while keeping your engine safe. Without a working knock sensor, your ECU's flying blind. It doesn't know if you're knocking or not.
